Treading Water is Harder than It Seems:
Heading into adoptive parenting, we often believe that we are well-prepared, ready for anything. We soon learn is that parenting a child with a history that includes loss and trauma can be harder than we anticipated, stressful and exhausting. We thought we had training, learned what to do…but learning something is not the same as doing it. Treading water for three minutes in a warm swimming pool is not the same as struggling to keep your head above water when you fall overboard into the ocean, waves crashing overhead and sharks swimming beneath you as you await rescue. Let’s share strategies that work in real life, building new skills to brave the waves and sharks as your children work through the impact of the core issues of adoption. Topics will include: How trauma, loss and grief tend to show up in behavior; strategies to help children (and ourselves) identify and cope with grief; attachment strategies when a child's behavior seems to push us away; how to depersonalize behavior; and when to pull out your own life preserver!
