More Than One Story: A Parent's Guide to Supporting Communications Through Every Adoption Story

Parents are often asked to be stewards of their family’s stories: to care for, preserve, share, and make space for those stories while honoring each person’s experience. This is especially important in adoption, whether families are preparing to adopt, actively parenting, or continuing to make meaning across a lifelong journey of questions, relationships, and evolving perspectives.

In this webinar, Francine Apy will introduce the BEACON Framework, which she created after completing her Master of Applied Positive Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania. Positive psychology is the research-based study of what helps individuals, families, and organizations function well and grow. It is a strengths-based approach that does not ignore hardship, but helps us notice strengths, meaning, relationships, resilience, hope, and what else may also be true.

Shaped by more than 30 years of lived adoption experience and 25 years of HR leadership, BEACON offers a proactive, practical way to help families Begin with story, Explore meaning, Acknowledge strengths, Connect with others, Open to possibility, and Navigate forward. Participants will leave with practical language, questions, and strategies to help keep adoption conversations open, honest, and ongoing, supporting stronger conversations, better connections, and improved well-being throughout the adoption journey.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER:

Francine Apy is the founder of SoulFilling, LLC, an author, speaker, and positive psychology practitioner dedicated to bringing balanced, open, and honest conversations, reflection, and practical, research-based tools for flourishing into the adoption community and beyond. An adoptive mom to three young adult sons, she brings more than three decades of lived experience with adoption and over 25 years of coaching and leadership experience to her work.

Francine earned her Master of Applied Positive Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania and is the creator of the BEACON Communication Model, a research-informed educational model designed to encourage ongoing, intentional communication to help individuals and families build greater openness, perspective, and understanding. Francine believes deeply in the power of stories and the narratives we carry. She also believes in the meaningful role parents can play as stewards of stories by creating space for curiosity, honest conversation, and a fuller understanding of the many experiences held within a family.

When Francine is not busy with writing and speaking, she enjoys hiking, traveling, and spending time with her husband, family, and two lovable Labrador retrievers.
